Connecting Square

What Better Tips reads, and how to disconnect

How the connection works

Better Tips connects to Square through Square's own sign-in flow (OAuth). You approve the connection on Square's website, Square hands Better Tips a token for your account, and Better Tips uses that token to read data when you run a report. Your Square password never touches Better Tips.

The connection is read-only. Better Tips can look at your data; it cannot create, edit or delete anything in Square, and it cannot move money.

What Better Tips reads

DataWhy it's needed
LocationsSo you can run a report for one location or all of them
Team members and jobsTo name each employee and know which jobs are tip-eligible
TimecardsTo know who was clocked in, where, and for how long
PaymentsTo find the card tip on each sale and the fee Square charged on it
Merchant profileYour business name and timezone, so dates line up with your day

Better Tips does not read customers, items, inventory, payouts or bank details.

What Better Tips stores

Very little. Better Tips keeps your Square merchant ID and the connection token so it can run reports without asking you to reconnect every time. Report data is fetched from Square when you run a report and is not kept afterwards. Team members and their logos are stored for your Better Tips workspace only.

Who can connect

The person who owns the Better Tips workspace connects Square. On a Pro plan, other members of your team see the same reports through that one shared connection — they don't connect their own Square accounts.

Disconnecting

Go to your team settings and click Disconnect on the Square card. Better Tips deletes its connection token immediately and can no longer read your account. You can also revoke access from the Square side at any time under Account & Settings → App integrations in your Square Dashboard. Reconnecting later is the same one-click flow as the first time.

Next: Reading your report

What each column in the report means, how Square's fee on each tip is calculated, how tips are split, and how to export to CSV.
